What makes you happy?
I sit down with clients on a daily basis and discuss what they want from their training. No matter what their goals whether it be to lose 10cm from their waste, gain lean muscle, lower their blood pressure, lose 15kg or whatever ~ 9 times out of 10 they have one thing in common. I then ask how they will feel when they achieve this goal and the common denominator is “HAPPIER!” I truly believe that HAPPINESS is the key to almost everything. If you’re a HAPPY person this will create a happy environment around you and breed happy outcomes. This may sound like bullshit but here is a test. Try and think back to when you were around someone that sucked the life out of you. A really unhappy person that was negative and grumpy. I’m sure this had a negative impact of you. On the flip side when you’re around happy, positive, outgoing people generally this rubs off on you. One of my favourite quotes from one of my favourite books (The 7 Habits of Highly effective People by Stephen Covey) is ... “between stimulus and response, man has the freedom to choose.” This basically means that when something happens we can choose how to respond. This obviously doesn’t apply to every situation, for example if a loved one passed away you would find it very difficult to “choose” not to get upset. However, this idea is extremely powerful and has changed lives all over the world. THE KEY TO HAPPINESS Countless studies have come to the same conclusion that the primary key to happiness is GRATITUDE… Yes that is being grateful! One study looked at US army troops returning from war. It was brought about as some soldiers soon after suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, became seriously depressed and ended their own lives. Some others had a very different outlook on their situation and were able to create a brilliantly positive perspective on their lives. The studies concluded that the difference was a higher emphasis on gratitude. HOW YOU CAN BE HAPPIER EVERYDAY This is a very simple yet effective exercise. On a daily basis if feeling down or negative focus on 3 things that you are grateful for. Even try this for a week and try and come up with 3 different things each day. You will be surprised at how many you can think of and the result ~ you will realise how lucky you are! For me right now 3 things off the top of my head are: 1) My amazing wife and son 2) My career that allows me to help people and change their lives in a positive way 3) My incredibly supportive family that have been there for me and had my back every step of my life This Christmas / holiday season take the time to smell the roses ~ be grateful for your home, your laughing kids, your health, the sun on your shoulders, the money in your bank account, the people in your life… There are a lot of people out there right now that have much less than you but may be more happy as they are grateful for the little things they DO have. The key to happiness is gratitude….so what are YOU grateful for?
