After a rough few months, and psychology sessions not helping my Mum suggested I do some coaching with a guy named Mick who had helped her with some gym stuff a while ago. I was quite keen on the idea as having another guy to not only talk to but also help me with things seemed quite cool to me. At the start we planned on doing some strength and flexibility work but because of the uncertainty surrounding my surgery we just decided on working on improving my mental health.
We began work before the start of my HSC by having a couple of sit down sessions and going through some of the things I had been struggling with, and what I wanted to work on. After a pretty crappy year full of stress, anxiety, uncertainty etc, this helped me to begin to break through the fog it had created and see what I needed to do to start to feel like myself again.
After my HSC Mick and I began to work on what we had talked about a few weeks prior. We came up with a mental health tool kit for when I was ‘in the eye of the storm’, strategies to continue to build mental muscle strength and weekly targets to achieve. These included positive affirmations, journal activities, meditation, “the goldilocks approach” and much more.
After only roughly 3-4 months of working with Mick, I have achieved both more in my mental health and confidence than I had with a year of psychology visits.
I now feel confident to go out into the world on my own, with less anxiety that I have ever felt, and I am extremely grateful for what Mick has done for me. I’ve begun working with kids with autism and have also commenced a bachelor’s degree in social work.
From where I was to now I am so happy I did not give up, and if anyone is struggling, just know that it always gets better!
